Where one of its names is a warning, the other is almost a riddle. Atmagupta means secret self.
What is concealed
Atman is self; gupta is hidden or guarded. The name points at the seed held inside the pod, protected by the very hairs that give the plant its other name. What is valuable is guarded by what is unpleasant.
Two names, one arrangement
Kapikacchu describes the outside; Atmagupta describes what is within. Neither is a synonym in the loose sense: each records a different fact about the same plant.
Naming as observation
This is the pattern across the materia medica. Gajabhakshya notes who browses a tree, Dhavala notes the colour of bark. The vocabulary carries field notes.
On the label
Kapikacchu Capsules state Mucuna pruriens, the identifier neither name supplies.
